BDSM Guide – Types of Dominants
In BDSM community, a top or dominant have a lot of roles depending on their desires and requirements. Being a Dom, you need to select a particular role to enter into a relationship. Sometimes, Doms do select various roles at one time, but it is very uncommon. If you want to perform various roles in a relationship, you need to discuss it with your partner.
What are the types of Dominants? It’s an interesting question and an easy one to answer. In this article, I am talking about the popular and broad categories only. There may be a lot more roles that tops can be in BDSM, but those are not popular in the BDSM community.
Before I start, do you know that there are various types of submissives as well? No! Then, you better read my post on…
Top
A top is basically someone who is using the terror as an instrument in a relationship. ‘Top’ is a very generic term, which is often used for someone who plays the role of a master, trainer, Dom, and etc.
Sometimes, a top also means that there is a very little or no power exchange in the relationship.
Dom or Domme
Dom or Dominant is the most popular term used for a top in BDSM world. People who don’t have enough knowledge of the BDSM roles often confuse it with other terms. They call every top a ‘Dom’ which is a big confusion.
Now, this involves a power exchange either it is only a bedroom D/s or full time. A Dom can make rules and control the submissive as per his desires.
Being a Dom, you are not an owner of your bottom and this is the main difference amongst a Dom and Master.
Daddy or Mommy

Daddy or Mommy is another popular term in the BDSM world and outside. It’s like you have got an adult baby and you have some serious control on him or her. It does involve sexual relations. In fact, Daddy often act as a Dom or Master on days.
Owner
Master is a quite similar term with Owner. The basic difference amongst these two terms is that Master can only own a slave while an Owner can own a type of human animal as well. For example, a kitty, a puppy, etc.
Master or Mistress
Now, this is a complete exchange. Once the relationship is initiated, the slave has no control over the things. Being or Dom or Mistress, you can establish the rules and protocols for the slave.

There could be restrictions to what can be used by the slave and what is not or you can order your slave to ask before using anything, even before speaking, eating and leaving the room.
In fewer words, a slave is a property of Master or Mistress and they can use it as per their requirements.
Trainer
A Trainer is a quite a difficult and different term to explain. In my experience, a trainer is someone who owns a human horse. In BDSM communities, there are human horse competitions where competitors take their trained partners who act very similar to horses. The trainers spend months on their horse to train them in a perfect manner.
Sadist
‘Sadist’ is a quite obvious term and anyone can presume it easily. A person who likes to offer pain for his own enjoyment is known as a sadist. There is no involvement of power exchange in such relations.
The term ‘sadist’ is used for those who enjoys flogging, spanking, hurting, and etc with no power exchange.
